The journey is fairly easy. I took a van from Ninh Binh, about four hours on the road, watching the landscape pass by, half lost in my thoughts, half pressed against the window like a child. The rice fields slowly give way to more urban areas, then water starts to appear, and with it, those famous rock formations that signal you are approaching something completely unique.

I booked the cruise directly through my hostel (Halong Backpacker Hostel), a bit last minute, as often happens while traveling. That’s what I like here—everything is simple. For a 2-day, 1-night cruise, I paid around 150 USD, and honestly, it’s one of those moments where you feel it’s worth every dollar. Everything is included: a private cabin on the boat, meals that are surprisingly good and generous, activities like kayaking or visiting caves, and even round-trip transport. You board, and for a while, you don’t have to organize anything. Just be there.

And then there is the bay itself. Ha Long Bay is hard to describe without sounding like you are exaggerating. Thousands of limestone peaks rising out of the water as if someone deliberately placed them there, a light mist floating above that creates an almost unreal atmosphere, and this constant feeling of being inside a setting that shouldn’t exist. There is also a whole cultural layer behind it, with legends of dragons descending from the sky to protect Vietnam, leaving these rock formations behind. And strangely, when you are there, it doesn’t sound like a myth. It sounds like a plausible explanation.

The first day goes by incredibly fast. As soon as we arrive on the boat, we are served food—not just a meal, but a full series of dishes that make you forget you are technically on a boat in the middle of nowhere. Then the activities begin. Kayaking, especially, remains a memorable moment. Paddling slowly between the rock formations, staying at water level, surrounded by massive cliffs in near silence, creates a feeling that is hard to put into words. You feel tiny, but in the right place.

We also visit caves, stop at certain points to observe, take photos, or simply look around without saying anything. And then comes the sunset. The boat slows down, people gather on the deck, and for a few minutes, everything becomes quieter. The sky changes color, the water reflects it all, and you realize you are living one of those moments you will replay in your head later on.

In the evening, the atmosphere is simple. We eat again, talk with other travelers, laugh, and share stories. Connections form easily in this kind of setting, as if simply being there, in the same place at the same time, is enough.

The next morning, waking up is softer. Stepping onto the deck still half asleep and seeing the bay in the morning silence is a completely different experience. There is something calmer, more intimate about it. As if the bay had changed personality overnight. We take our time, breathe, and enjoy the last moments before heading back to the mainland.

This cruise wasn’t just another activity to tick off a list. It was a pause in the journey. A moment where everything slows down, where you stop thinking about what comes next, where you let yourself be carried, both literally and figuratively. And when leaving, there remains that strange feeling of having experienced something truly beautiful, but difficult to fully explain. Like many things in travel, in the end.

Small confession to close this chapter: I have no photos of those two days.

Yes, I know. Almost criminal.

But I made a choice. To completely disconnect from my phone. No photos, no videos, no stories. Just me, the present moment, and what was happening around me. At the time, I wondered if I would regret it. If I would want to capture these unreal landscapes, these lights, these perfect moments.

And in the end, no.

I don’t regret it at all.

Because everything is still there. Stored differently. In my memory, in my emotions, in that very specific feeling I had at that time. And honestly, no photo could have captured it the way I lived it.

It’s different. More blurry, maybe. But also more real.

So no, I have nothing to show you.

But maybe that’s exactly why… it’s worth going there yourself to understand.

Quitter Ninh Binh pour se rendre à Baie d’Halong, c’est un peu comme changer de rêve sans vraiment se réveiller entre les deux.
