Coming home after a trip is a very particular feeling. And contrary to what people often think, it\u2019s not just about duration. Yes, coming back from a long trip doesn\u2019t carry the same weight as returning from a short stay. A long journey is almost like having lived another life for a while. You haven\u2019t just visited places: you\u2019ve changed rhythms, inner language, reflexes, and the way you exist in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You spend weeks or months in a world where everything is different: food, transportation, social codes, the way people communicate, even the smallest daily habits. Your brain is constantly engaged. You have to learn, adapt, observe. And very quickly, you become comfortable in that unfamiliarity. It becomes your new normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then one day\u2026 you come back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And suddenly, everything feels familiar\u2026 but not quite. Because you are no longer exactly the same person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is truly destabilizing about returning from a long trip is that your reference points are no longer really reference points. You come back to places you know, routines you\u2019ve already lived, but your perception has changed. Things that once felt normal now seem different, sometimes even strange. And on the other hand, things that felt simple while traveling become more \u201cflat\u201d here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also all those small everyday details that remind you you need to readjust. For example, in parts of Asia, you don\u2019t flush toilet paper down the toilet but put it in a bin next to it. In the moment, it becomes automatic. And then you return to the West\u2026 and your brain glitches a little. For a while, you hesitate, you think, you remember. And you realize you have to unlearn habits that had become second nature elsewhere. This kind of small shift may seem trivial, but accumulated, it creates a real sense of strangeness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s also part of coming back: realizing that you\u2019ve adopted other ways of living, and now you have to recontextualize them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there\u2019s something even more subtle. We often hope that home will have changed too\u2014that we\u2019ll come back and feel that something has evolved here as well. But in most cases, everything has stayed the same. The streets, the routines, the conversations, the faces. Everything continues as if nothing had happened. Except you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that contrast can be hard to explain. Because internally, you\u2019ve experienced so much, so much change, so much intensity\u2026 that returning to a stable environment can almost feel empty at first. Not empty because something is missing, but empty because the contrast is so big.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is often where the famous \u201cpost-travel blues\u201d appears. That little period of sadness or nostalgia after a long trip. You slowly come down from the constant adrenaline of movement, discovery, encounters, and unpredictability. And your body, mind, and heart try to find a new rhythm. It\u2019s an in-between space: you are no longer traveling, but you are not fully back yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because while traveling\u2014especially for a long period\u2014your brain is in a state of constant novelty. Every day brings something different: a new place, a new transport system to figure out, a new person to meet, an unexpected situation to handle. Even simple things become stimulating. Eating, getting around, finding your way\u2026 everything requires a bit of adaptation, and everything becomes a small victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your system is almost constantly fueled by this gentle adrenaline: the unknown, discovery, unpredictability. And even on quieter days, your environment changes enough to keep your mind awake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then you come back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the contrast is brutal, even if everything is \u201cnormal.\u201d Suddenly, there is no more constant novelty. The streets are the same. The routines too. The routes are familiar. The faces are known. And your brain keeps expecting something\u2026 that no longer arrives at the same pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a bit like going from a continuous film full of new scenes to a still image. Not because your life here isn\u2019t beautiful, but because the level of stimulation has completely changed. And your body, used to that high rhythm of discovery, suddenly has to slow down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s where the emptiness can be felt. Not a dramatic emptiness, but a kind of inner silence. As if something had quietly switched off. You look around and think: \u201cokay\u2026 and now?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what do we do with that? \ud83c\udf31<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With time, I\u2019ve come to understand that this phase is not something to \u201cfix,\u201d but something to gently move through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my case, I realized that coming home shouldn\u2019t be a sudden return to my old life, but a transition. I took time to reconnect with loved ones, but at my own pace. Not in a \u201cI have to see everyone and tell everything right away\u201d kind of way, but by choosing my moments. It allows you to reconnect without feeling overwhelmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also kept making space for time alone. Because while traveling, I had learned to enjoy my own company, and I didn\u2019t want to lose that when I came back. Going out to eat alone, going to the cinema, walking, going into nature\u2026 these moments helped me avoid a too-brutal break between \u201ctravel\u201d and \u201chome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And most importantly, I tried to bring a bit of travel back into my everyday life here. Not the landscapes, not the hostels, but the mindset. Slowing down, planning less, leaving more room for the unexpected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there is also something deeper I\u2019ve come to understand over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coming back is not an ending. It is an integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We don\u2019t really \u201creturn\u201d as who we were before. We come back with a version of ourselves that has been expanded, shifted, transformed. And the challenge is not to become who we were again\u2026 but to find how this new version of us can exist here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it shows up in small, concrete things: changing your routine, keeping certain travel habits, continuing to explore your own city as if you were still discovering it. Sometimes it\u2019s simply about accepting not to feel perfectly okay right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And little by little, the two worlds come together. The world of travel and the world of home. And we stop feeling \u201cin between.\u201d We start feeling whole in this new balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some images from coming home. Simple moments, but ones that now carry a different meaning. Looking at them, I don\u2019t just see the end of a journey, but everything it took to get there: movement, fatigue, emotions, returning to myself. These photos feel good. They remind me that even the blurriest transitions eventually soften, and that in the middle of the chaos of coming home, there is always a little quiet beauty left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
