It is a country that is both authentic, welcoming, and full of contrasts, perfect for slow travel and letting yourself be surprised at every step. The wildlife and flora there are incredibly rich — I have rarely seen so much diversity in a single country, with elephants, monkeys, tropical birds, and lush jungles all around.

On this page, you will find simple and practical advice based on my experience there: useful information to know before you go, during your trip, as well as common mistakes to avoid.

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Visa and formalities

For Canadians, a visa is not required for short tourist stays (up to 30 days), but an electronic travel authorization (ETA) must be completed online before arrival on their website here.

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your date of departure from Sri Lanka.

Upon entry into the country, authorities may ask you to present a return or onward ticket as well as proof of sufficient funds for the duration of your stay.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Best time to go

Sri Lanka has several monsoon seasons. In general, the wettest periods vary depending on the region: the northeast is more affected between December and February, while the southwest receives more rain between May and September.

Between these two main monsoon seasons, there are so-called “inter-monsoon” periods (March to April and October to November), when the weather remains generally variable with sometimes heavy showers and fairly frequent thunderstorms.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Budget to plan

Sri Lanka is a very affordable destination, especially for backpackers.

With a budget approach, it is possible to get by on around 25 to 50 CAD per day, including hostels, local food, and transportation.

For more comfort (private room, activities, faster transportation), you should expect around 60 to 100 CAD per day.

The main costs are accommodation, train or tuk-tuk rides, as well as certain activities such as safaris or cultural site visits.

The local currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR).

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Accommodation

The most convenient platforms for booking are Booking.com, Hostelworld, and sometimes Airbnb, although many travelers also book directly on site.

In Colombo, I highly recommend Alma Hostel: clean and modern, with comfortable and well-maintained dorms. The staff is incredible, welcoming, and always helpful. There are nice common areas to socialize as well as a practical shared kitchen. A great atmosphere, perfect for meeting other travelers.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Transport

To travel easily between cities, the 12Go Asia app is very convenient for booking buses and trains in advance, especially on popular routes.

The apps PickMe and Uber are the best options in Sri Lanka for ordering a taxi or tuk-tuk with a fixed price and avoiding scams, with PickMe being the most widely used locally.

On the ground, the tuk-tuk is the number one mode of transport, much more common than taxis. It is simple, cheap, and ideal for short distances.

If you want to drive yourself, it is possible to rent a car, but you need an international driving permit in addition to your Canadian license. You must then obtain a temporary permit or official recognition through the DMT in Werahera, at Colombo airport, or at the Automobile Association of Ceylon. Note that a Canadian license alone is not sufficient and may require a certified translation.

A truly unique experience in Sri Lanka is renting your own tuk-tuk. This is done through specialized companies such as Tuktuk Rental. Booking is done online, then on site you present your passport, your license (ideally international), sign the contract, and leave a refundable security deposit. Before departure, you go through a short training session of about 30 to 60 minutes: getting familiar with the vehicle, local driving rules, safety instructions, and a small test to ensure you are ready to drive. For one week, the price is usually around 180 to 300 CAD, depending on the season and insurance included. Fuel is at your own expense.

Distances in Sri Lanka may look short on the map, but travel times are often longer than expected. For example, 100 km can easily take 3 to 5 hours depending on roads, traffic, and weather. It is best not to overpack your itinerary and to favor slow travel.

Road conditions require adapting to sometimes chaotic driving, narrow roads, and fairly lively traffic, but this is also part of what makes the experience memorable.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
ATM

ATMs are easy to find in cities and tourist areas in Sri Lanka. Most accept international Visa and Mastercard cards without any issues.

However, once you leave major cities or very touristy areas (villages, rural regions, mountains, or less developed coasts), ATMs become much rarer or even nonexistent. It is therefore better to withdraw cash before heading into these areas.

Fees are often charged for each withdrawal, so it is better to withdraw larger amounts to reduce costs.

Always decline the ATM conversion (choose the local currency).

Cash remains essential, especially for small restaurants, tuk-tuks, and local shops. Many places do not accept cards, so you should always carry Sri Lankan rupees with you.

ATMs are generally reliable, but it is best to use those located near banks or in more secure areas.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Scams to avoid

Overall, Sri Lanka is quite safe, but like anywhere, there are a few common scams to know about to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Inflated tuk-tuk prices: very common. Some drivers quote tourists much higher prices. Always negotiate before getting in or use an app like PickMe or Uber to get a fixed fare.

Fake guides / unofficial tickets: around tourist sites, some people present themselves as official guides or sell “tickets” at higher prices than the real ones. Always buy tickets at official counters.

Commission-based “artisan” shops: some tuk-tuk drivers take you to gem, tea, or handicraft shops where they receive a commission. Prices there are often inflated.

“Broken tuk-tuk” or detour scams: some drivers may claim a road is closed or the vehicle has an issue to force a longer, more expensive route.

Suspicious money exchange: avoid exchanging money on the street or in unofficial places. Always use banks or reliable exchange offices.

Stilt fishing is often presented as a local tradition, but in many tourist areas it is mainly staged for photos. After taking pictures, it is common for money to be requested. It is better to be aware of this in advance and ask clearly if it is paid.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Vaccines

For travel to Sri Lanka, it is recommended to be up to date with routine vaccines: tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, polio, as well as measles.

Depending on the duration and type of trip, some additional vaccines may also be recommended, such as hepatitis A (very common for travelers) and sometimes hepatitis B for longer stays or higher-risk exposure.

No risk of yellow fever. However, proof of yellow fever vaccination is required if you are arriving from a country, even in transit, where the disease is present. To see the list of countries at risk of yellow fever transmission and countries requiring yellow fever vaccination Here.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Security

Overall, Sri Lanka is a fairly safe country to travel in, but it is important to keep certain realities in mind.

In the north and east of the country, military and police presence remains visible, with frequent checkpoints and roads that can be closed or changed without notice.

Even though most areas are accessible, there are still in some regions such as the Jaffna Peninsula risks related to former minefields, sometimes well marked and sometimes less so, so it is important to stay on known roads and follow local indications.

As a solo female traveler, Sri Lanka is generally considered a relatively safe destination, especially during the day and in tourist areas. As in many countries, there may be some staring or occasional unwanted attention, but dangerous situations remain rare if common sense is applied.

From my own experience, I did not personally feel unsafe during my stay, and I even walked alone at night without issues. People were generally respectful and helpful. However, this is my personal experience and it does not mean everyone will have the same, so as everywhere, it is important to stay aware, trust your instincts, and adapt to the situation.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
SIM card and internet

In Sri Lanka, it is easy to stay connected.

Local SIM cards are very affordable and usually offer a lot of data for a low price, and you can buy them directly at the airport or in telecom shops.

The main networks, Dialog and Mobitel, are the most reliable. Dialog is often considered the best in terms of coverage, especially if you are traveling across different regions of the country.

In major cities and tourist areas, the network is generally stable and fast. However, once you go into more rural, mountainous, or remote areas, the connection can become weaker or sometimes unstable.

eSIM is a great option if you want to avoid on-site procedures: you arrive and you are connected immediately. However, it can be slightly more expensive than local SIM cards.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Culture and local rules

In Sri Lanka, the culture is very respectful and influenced by Buddhism, so certain behaviors are important to know. For example, a slight nod or head tilt can sometimes mean “yes” or show agreement, but this gesture is also very subtle and depends on the cultural context — so it should not always be interpreted as a clear yes as in Western cultures.

The legal age for alcohol consumption is 21. It is also illegal to drink in public places. In addition, on certain religious days such as full moon days (Poya), the sale of alcohol is prohibited, and in general, alcohol can be difficult to find during religious holidays.

It is also very important to be respectful of religious symbols. For example, it is considered disrespectful, and in some cases can even lead to fines or more serious consequences, to pose next to Buddha statues in an inappropriate way, to turn your back to a statue, or to wear clothing, jewelry, or tattoos considered disrespectful toward Buddhism.

To avoid any discomfort, it is recommended to dress modestly, remain discreet in religious sites, and always respect local traditions and sacred objects.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Tips for saving money in Sri Lanka

Traveling in Sri Lanka can be very affordable if you make a few simple choices.

Local transport such as buses and trains are by far the cheapest options, and often much more economical than taxis or private drivers. Apps like 12Go Asia can help with planning, but buying tickets on site is often cheaper.

For short distances, using tuk-tuks via PickMe or Uber helps avoid negotiating and ensures a fair price.

For accommodation, guesthouses and hostels offer very good value for money. Booking last minute on site can sometimes be cheaper, especially outside peak season.

Local food is also a major way to save money: small Sri Lankan restaurants (“rice & curry”) are delicious and much cheaper than tourist or Western restaurants.

For activities, comparing prices and booking directly through your accommodation or local agencies often helps avoid commissions. Some safaris or excursions are highly negotiable on site.

Withdrawing money in one go from ATMs also helps reduce banking fees.

Finally, traveling slowly allows you to save a lot: fewer transfers mean less transport cost and more time to find good deals on the ground.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
2SLGBTQI+ people

In Sri Lanka, relationships and certain acts between people of the same sex are still criminalized under the law. This means that 2ELGBTQI+ individuals may, in some cases, be exposed to legal risks, as well as social discrimination depending on the context.

It is therefore important to know that visibility and public expression of one’s identity or orientation may not be perceived in the same way as in Western countries, and that certain situations can be sensitive.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Applications, reservations and companies used during the trip

For transportation, since I was not traveling during peak tourist season, I often bought tickets directly on site without booking too far in advance. However, for taxis and tuk-tuks in the city, I always used apps like PickMe or Uber to avoid negotiating and get a fixed price.

For the Yala National Park safari, it was a gift so it is difficult to evaluate the exact cost. However, from what I understood, prices vary a lot between agencies, so it is really worth shopping around on site and comparing offers before booking.

For tuk-tuk rental, I went through Tuktuk Rental Sri Lanka. They are based in Colombo, but they can even deliver the tuk-tuk directly to your accommodation. For one week, we paid around 250 to 300 CAD per person (shared between two, all included: rental, insurance, fuel, permit, and basic fees). It was very convenient and easy to organize.

For accommodation, I mainly used Booking.com, but also Agoda and sometimes Hostelworld, depending on prices and hostel availability.

</details>

Le Sri Lanka est une île magnifique d’Asie du Sud, entre plages sauvages, plantations de thé dans les montagnes et temples chargés d’histoire.
