Between the majestic temples of Angkor, the lively atmosphere of Phnom Penh, and the peaceful rural landscapes, the country offers a powerful mix of beauty and emotion. It is also a warm destination, where encounters with locals and the simplicity of everyday life make the journey feel very authentic. A touching, rich, and surprising country at every step.

On this page, you will find simple and practical advice based on my experience there: useful things to know before you go, during your trip, and tips to avoid some common mistakes.

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Visa and formalities

A visa is required for Canadians to enter Cambodia. You can apply for an e-visa online Here before your departure, or obtain a visa on arrival at major airports and border crossings. The visa on arrival process is straightforward: you simply pay the fee (around 30–36 USD depending on the entry point). In most cases, no photo is required. Please note that the visa is valid for 30 days.

Before arrival, you must also complete the e-Arrival form Here within 7 days prior to your expected entry date.

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after entry.

To enter Cambodia overland from Vietnam, the process is relatively simple for Canadians. A tourist visa is required, but it is easy to obtain directly at the border. You can get a visa on arrival for around 30 USD, payable in cash (USD recommended). In some cases, there may also be small unofficial fees of 1 to 5 USD depending on the crossing, so it is useful to have small cash on hand. At the border, the process is done in several steps: first, you get your exit stamp from Vietnam, then you walk or take a short transfer to the Cambodian checkpoint to apply for your visa. You usually need to fill out a form, provide a photo (sometimes taken on-site for a small fee), and pay the visa fee. After that, your entry stamp is issued for Cambodia.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Best time to go

The best time to visit Cambodia is generally from November to April, during the dry season.

The rainy season (monsoon) runs from May to November. During this period, showers can be frequent and intense, especially in the late afternoon. In some regions, typhoons in the broader area can also increase rainfall and occasionally cause temporary flooding.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Budget to plan

Cambodia can be very affordable for backpackers. Street food and guesthouses make it easy to travel on a low budget, and you can easily adjust your spending depending on your travel style.

For a budget backpacking trip, expect to spend around 25 to 45 CAD per day. This includes a hostel, local food (street food or small restaurants), transportation by bus or scooter, and a few activities.

The official currency is the Cambodian riel (KHR), but US dollars are also widely accepted and commonly used in daily transactions.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Accommodation

For accommodation in Cambodia, apps like Booking, Agoda, and Hostelworld are the most convenient for comparing and booking easily.

The Onederz chain is a very good option if you’re looking for something comfortable, clean, and social at an affordable price. You can find it in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Kampot, Sihanoukville, and on islands like Koh Rong.

In Kampot, I stayed at Funky Moon Kampot, a hostel in the middle of nature with a great view of the mountains and the lake, around 4 to 6 USD per night in a dorm. They also offer the option of volunteering in exchange for free accommodation.

In Battambang, I stayed at Pomme Hostel, Bar & Restaurant, a small hostel with simple but comfortable huts, well located in the city, around 2 to 5 USD per night. The atmosphere is very friendly and perfect for meeting other travelers.

On Koh Ta Kiev, I stayed at Bubble Paradise Koh Ta Kiev, a simple and immersive nature hostel, perfect for completely disconnecting and experiencing the island in its most raw and off-grid form.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Transport

Distances often take longer than expected, and journeys can be slow even when the distance looks short on the map. It’s always best to allow more time than what Google Maps suggests.

For intercity travel (buses, minivans, boats), the easiest option is to use 12Go Asia online. You can compare schedules, companies, and book your ticket directly. Booking in advance is not always necessary, but it can be useful during high season.

For getting around cities, Grab and PassApp are the most convenient apps. They work like Uber and give you a fixed price in advance for tuk-tuks and local taxis.

There are also street tuk-tuks, which you can easily find anywhere by flagging them down. However, you should always negotiate the price before getting in, as drivers often overcharge tourists.

An International Driving Permit is required to drive in Cambodia, and helmets are mandatory for both drivers and passengers on motorbikes.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
ATM

ATMs in Cambodia are easy to find in major cities and tourist areas such as Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville, and they generally accept international cards without issues. Visa and Mastercard usually work fine, so withdrawing cash is quite straightforward.

They are overall reliable in cities and tourist zones.

However, fees are charged per withdrawal, so it is better to take out larger amounts to reduce costs.

Always decline the ATM conversion (choose the local currency).

In smaller islands and remote areas, the situation is very different. For example, on Koh Ta Kiev, there are no ATMs or easy access to cash at all. You must bring enough cash with you, as everything is paid in cash on-site. The same applies to Koh Rong.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Scams to avoid

One of the most common scams involves card games or “friendly” street games. You may be invited to play, made to feel comfortable, and then end up losing money in rigged situations. The rule is simple: if someone approaches you to play for money in an overly easy or insistent context, it’s best to refuse outright.

Another frequent scam involves tuk-tuks without a pre-agreed price. Some drivers may quote a very low price at first, then increase it upon arrival or add unexpected fees. Always negotiate the price before getting in, or use apps like Grab or PassApp to avoid this.

There can also be fake bills or incorrect change, especially in markets or small shops. Just stay attentive during transactions.

Finally, in some tourist areas, you may be offered fake tickets for attractions or excursions at prices that seem too good to be true. In these cases, it’s better to book through hostels or reputable platforms.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Vaccines

For travel to Cambodia, no vaccines are mandatory, but it is generally recommended to be up to date with routine vaccines such as hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus.

No risk of yellow fever. However, proof of yellow fever vaccination is required if you are arriving from a country, even in transit, where the disease is present. To see the list of countries at risk of yellow fever transmission and countries requiring yellow fever vaccination Here.

Regarding malaria, there is a risk in certain areas of Cambodia and during certain times of the year. Malaria is a serious disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Preventive medication may be recommended depending on your itinerary and travel period. It is advised to consult a pharmacist or a travel clinic before departure to check whether medication is necessary in your case.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Security

Cambodia is generally a fairly safe destination for travelers, but there are a few important points to be aware of.

It is recommended to avoid travel within 50 km of the Thai border due to occasional tensions in some border regions.

The country is also affected by the presence of landmines left over from past conflicts. Although many areas have been cleared, some rural regions may still pose a risk. Mine danger can still exist near isolated sites such as the temples of Preah Vihear and Phnom Kulen, in certain border areas (notably with Thailand), as well as along the River of a Thousand Lingas. Mines may also be found in rural areas of provinces such as Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Kampong Thom, Pursat, and Siem Reap—except for Siem Reap city and the Angkor site, which are considered safe.

For women, Cambodia is generally quite safe, especially in tourist areas. The main concerns are mostly related to common-sense precautions: night transport, isolated areas, or being alone late at night.

Serious assaults are rare in areas frequented by travelers, but as everywhere, it is advisable to stay alert, avoid traveling alone in isolated places at night, and use reliable transportation.

Street harassment can occur in some urban areas, but it is usually limited and less persistent than in many other countries. Most interactions with locals are respectful and kind.

From my own experience, I felt safe in Cambodia. I even moved around at night without issues and did not encounter any uncomfortable situations. However, this is only my personal experience and may differ from yours. As with any destination, it is important to remain aware and take basic precautions.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
SIM card and internet

To stay connected in Cambodia, the easiest option is to buy a local SIM card upon arrival (at the airport, kiosks, or shops in town). It’s quick, cheap, and very convenient.

The main providers are Metfone, Smart, and Cellcard. You can easily get a SIM with plenty of data for just a few dollars, often ready to use immediately.

There are also eSIM options, which are convenient if you want to set everything up before arriving without changing a physical SIM card.

Network coverage is generally good in cities and tourist areas, and a bit more variable in rural or remote regions, but overall it is sufficient for Google Maps, messaging, and calls.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Culture and local rules

In temples, it is essential to wear appropriate clothing, covering shoulders and knees out of respect for sacred places. Never touch the head of Buddha statues, and avoid pointing your feet toward a statue or a monk, as this is considered disrespectful.

Immigration rules are strict: overstaying a visa can lead to fines, detention, or deportation.

A permit is required to buy, possess, or export cultural or archaeological objects.

Authorities also regulate and crack down on certain party events such as bar crawls, raves, pool parties, and any activities involving drug use. These types of behaviors are strongly discouraged.

Excessive alcohol consumption and disrespectful behavior are frowned upon, especially near important cultural sites like Angkor.

To respect local culture, it is important to dress modestly, follow social and religious customs, behave discreetly in public, avoid photographing sensitive installations such as airports or military sites, and always ask permission before taking photos of locals, including monks.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Tips for saving money in Cambodia

For accommodation, hostels are the cheapest option, especially if you book on arrival or last minute via Booking or Agoda. Dorm rooms are often very inexpensive, and some hostels even offer discounts for long stays or volunteering in exchange for accommodation.

Withdraw cash in fewer transactions but in larger amounts to reduce bank fees. If possible, use a no-foreign-fee card.Withdraw cash in fewer transactions but in larger amounts to reduce bank fees. If possible, use a no-foreign-fee card.

For food, eating local is key. Small Cambodian restaurants and street food are much cheaper than Western-style restaurants, and often better for experiencing authentic local cuisine.

For transportation, choosing buses and minivans booked through platforms like 12Go Asia or directly at hostels helps avoid inflated prices. In cities, using PassApp or Grab is usually cheaper and more convenient than negotiating tuk-tuks each time.

Many activities such as temples, markets, and walking routes are free or very low-cost. Paid attractions are still affordable, and it’s easy to enjoy the country without spending much.

Finally, avoiding overly touristy areas or Western-style restaurants also helps keep your budget low while offering a more authentic experience.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
2SLGBTQI+ people

In Cambodia, same-sex relationships and sexual activity between consenting adults are not criminalized under the law.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Applications, reservations and companies used during the trip

For transportation (buses, ferries, etc.), I mainly used 12Go Asia. It’s convenient for comparing and booking in advance, especially for the Vietnam–Cambodia route, which I did with Long Phuong Cambodia, the cheapest option at the time. Sometimes, I also bought tickets directly at bus or boat stations, which often worked out slightly cheaper.

For getting around locally, I used public transport when possible, but mostly relied on the Grab app, which is very convenient for city travel.

For accommodation, I mainly used Booking.com, but also Agoda and sometimes Hostelworld, depending on prices and hostel availability.

For activities and excursions, I used GetYourGuide and TripAdvisor, but there are also many direct bookings available on the ground.

For Angkor Wat, I bought my ticket directly online from the official website Here.

For the Tonlé Sap Floating Village, I took a tuk-tuk directly on site. After some negotiation, I paid around 20 CAD all included (round trip + boat in the village + local guide).

For Koh Ta Kiev, I arranged transport directly with my hostel, Bubble Paradise Koh Ta Kiev, which makes access to the island much easier.

In Battambang, I rented a scooter from LE Scooter Rental without any issues. As always, I took photos of the scooter before leaving to avoid any misunderstandings upon return.

</details>

Le Cambodge, est un pays marqué par une histoire forte et une culture profondément attachante.
