There are places that make you feel like you\u2019re traveling\u2026 and others that make you feel like you\u2019re going back in time. Casco Viejo clearly belongs to the second category. As soon as you enter it, you feel the atmosphere shift. The modern skyscrapers of Panama City gradually disappear behind you, and you find yourself immersed in a setting worthy of a film set. Cobblestone streets, colonial buildings with colorful facades, wrought-iron balconies filled with plants, imposing churches\u2026 it is beautiful, but not in a \u201cperfect\u201d way. A beauty that has lived. That carries scars, but wears them well.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Historically, this place was born out of necessity. After the destruction of Panam\u00e1 Viejo by the pirate Henry Morgan in 1671, the Spanish decided to rebuild the city\u2026 elsewhere. In a more defensible location. And that is how Casco Viejo was born, in the 17th century. A district designed to resist, with walls, cannons, and a strategic position facing the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But today, it is no longer war that you feel. It is life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, getting there meant renting a car for the next part of my trip in Panama. From downtown Panama City, it takes about 10 to 15 minutes by car to reach Casco Viejo. Easy, quick\u2026 but parking can be a bit of a challenge in the narrow streets of the neighborhood. Let\u2019s just say it adds to the adventure lol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once there, I did what I love most: getting lost. No real plan, just walking. Turning left because a street looks pretty, right because there is music. And Casco Viejo is perfect for that. At every corner, there is something to see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plaza de la Independencia, the historic heart of the neighborhood:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is literally the historic and symbolic heart of the district. This is where everything happened for modern Panama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1903, it was on this square that Panama proclaimed its independence from Colombia. Imagine the scene: crowds gathered, hope, tension\u2026 a pivotal moment for an entire country. Standing there today means walking through a place where history changed course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Culturally, it is still a gathering point today. You will see locals talking, guides sharing stories, travelers like you soaking in the atmosphere. It is a living square, but also a deeply symbolic one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impossible to miss. It dominates the square with its two large white towers, almost unreal under the sunlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Built over several decades (and even centuries), it reflects Spanish influences, but also local adaptations. Inside, it is simple, yet impressive. This is not a \u201cbling-bling\u201d cathedral; it is a place that breathes faith, stability, and a certain humility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Historically, it has witnessed everything: colonization, independence, political transformations. It was \u2014 and remains \u2014 a spiritual pillar for the population.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Plaza de Francia:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This square is completely different. More open, facing the sea, with an incredible view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It pays tribute to the French who attempted to build the Panama Canal before the Americans \u2014 an attempt that failed, but cost thousands of lives. There is a monument, almost solemn, that recalls this effort and sacrifice. It is also a place where you can sit, look at the ocean, and reflect. There is something calm here, almost meditative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plaza Bolivar: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smaller, more intimate, but just as interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is named after Sim\u00f3n Bol\u00edvar, a major figure in South American independence. It is here that he dreamed of uniting Latin American countries into one great nation. Today, it is a lively square: caf\u00e9s, terraces, animated conversations. You really feel the local culture here \u2014 less touristy, more everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a truly special energy in Casco Viejo. A mix of local and tourist, past and present. You can pass a street vendor right next to a luxury hotel, hear traditional music and then a DJ a little further away. It is lively, but never overwhelming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then\u2026 there was that moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I decided to keep walking, to step a little off the beaten path. Because that\u2019s often where the real discoveries happen, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Except this time\u2026 let\u2019s just say my instinct started speaking to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The streets were getting emptier. Less maintained. The looks a bit more insistent. There was something in the air\u2026 a vibe that was hard to explain, but clearly not the same. You know that gut feeling that tells you you might not exactly be where you\u2019re supposed to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And just to confirm it all, the police came to meet me.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

No panic, nothing dramatic \u2014 but very clear. They told me I shouldn\u2019t be there, that it wasn\u2019t safe for me, especially alone. A direct warning, but a kind one. And honestly, I appreciated it. Because sometimes, when traveling, you want to explore so much that you forget to listen to the little signals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I headed back toward the lively streets of Casco Viejo, with a small lesson in mind: adventure is great\u2026 but safety is better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Casco Viejo is not just a pretty neighborhood. It\u2019s a place that tells you a story with every step. A story of reconstruction, resilience, transformation. And if you take the time to get lost in it \u2014 while staying aware \ud83d\ude09 \u2014 you\u2019ll leave with much more than beautiful photos. You\u2019ll leave with a feeling. That of having touched, even for a moment, the soul of Panama.<\/p>\n<\/div>
